Is God Creative?

In the beginning, God created… Everything! (Genesis 1-2) God created the earth and everything in it. He created every person who’s ever been. Every day He creates a sunrise and paints a sunset. He creates a symphony of music through birds, animal sounds, the wind and the waves. He created music. He created color. He made rainbows. He owns the rainbows. He created all the food we eat. He made it all good, but of course, due to sin, it all has been corrupted.

We often hear of God being the Creator, but is He creative? Is He innovative? Those are words we use for artists, for business executives. Those are not words we often attribute to the God of all Creation. But why not?

When I look at ancient art like the Sistine Chapel, the artist Michaelangelo clearly believed as his paintings glorify God. I walked through the New York Library recently and stood in awe of the nearly six story tall paintings. One clearly depicted Moses coming down the mountain after receiving the 10 commandments. It moved my spirit in a way worship or studying God’s Word couldn’t.

Another day, I spent at the Modern Museum of Art, questioning a lot of so called “art.” One area had poems. It occurred to me, that the same creative brain that develops art is also required for writing things like poetry. That evening, I saw a Christian’s artwork on display and stood in awe. That’s when it hit me. We cannot create great art without the great Creator. Ancient artists knew that. But modern artists try to create art without God regularly. The Christian artist’s artwork I saw that day I found better than much of what I had seen in the museum.

We have been so conditioned to not mention the Lord in certain areas of life. Yet, the arts have suffered as a result. If you’re an artist or writer or musician, don’t ever attempt to do that without the Lord. Bring Him into your craft and glorify Him in so doing!
