When Indianapolis hosted the super bowl, many preparations had to be made to accommodate the crowds. Beyond the hotels and stadium built just to be able to win the super bowl bid, roads needed repaved, more restaurants moved in, and everyone already there staffed their businesses like crazy that week! Restaurants had to make even extra preparations. Beyond just stocking up extra food to accommodate the crowds, they had to order nearly double stocks of supplies because with road closures to accommodate the crowds, vendors would not have access to deliver if they ran out of something.
Mark 3:9 NASB
“And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him.”
Jesus and His disciples also had to make accommodations for the crowds that followed Jesus. Look at Mark 3:9, “And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him.” Can you imagine what might have happened if they did not get a boat ready? They might have just kept pushing Jesus into the sea! He might have ended up walking on water earlier than expected! Or it could have been dangerous having people get into the water to see Jesus without knowing how to swim! If people were willing to dig through a roof to get to Jesus (Mark 2:4), surely they would be willing to swim to Him! Ultimately though, Jesus wanted people to hear His message and it’d probably be much more effective coming from a boat than from a man treading water. So they prepared for the crowd by getting a boat ready.
Do you handle crowds very often? Does your church? What special preparations do you make to accommodate a crowd? What things can you do to help the crowd hear the Word of God? Do you help with the coffee at your church? Are you an usher or a greeter? As needs in the church arise due to its growth, are you one to help with that? Do you open up your small group to welcome a new person to the church? Pray today about what you can do to help accommodate crowds wanting to know Jesus. In some parts of the world people come to know the Lord in droves. They especially need prayers and even workers to help people know Jesus more.
