1 Peter 2:2-3
“Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.”
I have a friend who’s first child was always small and did not grow much her entire first year of life. By the time she had her second child, they found out the baby simply needed more food! Once they started feeding him more, his growth went through the roof! Whereas her first baby was always in around the 10th percentile, her second was near the 90th! She looks back at her first baby and says, “I wonder if she would have grown faster if we offered her more food too.”
Babies need milk to survive. Whether that comes from their mommas or a bottle, they cannot survive without it. Not only that, but if they do not get enough, they do not grow! They crave the milk that helps them grow and live. We know that when we hear them cry when they’re in desperate need of it!
Our verse today talks about spiritual growth. Just as babies need milk to survive and grow, we should long for God’s Word in order to grow. If we have a relationship with Christ, we will long for the truth we find in the Bible. We will crave it.
The Word of God enables growth for those who read it. The next time you hear a baby craving some milk, consider if you’ve been craving God’s Word lately. Pray to crave His Word and gain spiritual nutrition necessary for your spiritual growth today. Amen!
