I suddenly have such great respect for anyone who knows or has learned another language. I have recently been trying to learn another language and it’s tough! In my learning, I have tried to immerse myself in that other language as much as possible. That means I am looking for songs in that language, a Bible in that language, short books in that language, movies, etc. In order to learn the language, I find I am completely immersing myself in the culture without even realizing it! In doing so, I also realize how little resources are available at times for those who do not speak English. I think about how many good English Bible translations we have and how few there are in other languages. I think of how many Christian artists sing in English and how few sing in other languages. Then inevitably, I start to wonder how learning another language can be beneficial for the Gospel!
Philippians 2:11 NASB
“and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Learning another language gives us the opportunity to share Christ to a whole lot more people if we speak their language! Praise God! How on earth is every tongue expected to confess that Jesus is Lord if they do not know? How are they expected to know God if they are not told? And how are they expected to understand if not in their own native tongue? If you speak another language, ask God how He might desire you to use that for His glory. If not, praise Him for making our world so diverse with so many different languages. And pray for those who have not heard the Gospel in their own language. Pray for people to go share the Good News in a way those who have not heard can understand. Pray as our verse says, “that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” Amen (Philippians 2:11)!
