“And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.”
I have been utterly in awe of this verse lately. It speaks of the end times and people who follow Christ being faced with death for such a belief. Yet, the verse says they overcame! We’re given two reasons for this. For one, it’s because of Jesus’ blood. In other words, because He overcame the enemy first, He’s already won the battle. Christ has already defeated the enemy! Jesus already has the ultimate victory! Nothing in this life will change that—not even the devil himself. And because Christ died and rose again on the cross, if we believe in Him, He lives within us. That means the same power that defeated death is living within us! That’s why they overcame!
We also have another reason why they overcame though. It says “because of the word of their testimony” (Revelation 12:11). They spoke, testifying of God. We do not know exactly what they spoke, but we know it’s a testimony about God’s goodness!
Then the last part of the verse amazes me as well. “Even when faced with death,” it says, “they did not love their life” (Revelation 12:11). In other words, they were willing to die for their faith in Christ! Are you?
This verse is speaking to people at the end times who testify of Christ and are killed for it. While some may think we’re living in the end times now, most agree we’re not. But who knows, by the time you read this, things could be different. Either way, we all face an enemy in the spiritual realm who is out to steal, kill, and destroy us (John 10:10). What’s your plan to overcome him? Are you leaning on Christ’s power within you and testifying to the truth of His Word? Do you love your life more than Christ? What if you are faced with death for your faith? Will that silence your testimony of Him? Or will you continue testifying to His goodness despite the consequences?
Let’s pray for courage to be the types of people who overcome by leaning on and trusting in Christ, even with our very lives. Amen!
