The 5 Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman

tuesday-reviewYou know, I’m almost ashamed to say that I just read this book this past year! I’ve probably owned at least seven copies over the last ten years and have taken the personal profile a few times. I probably knew the love languages by heart, but never actually read the book. So… what’s so great about the book anyway? Well, I definitely agree with all you’ve heard. It really is all it’s cracked up to be. It’s worth the hype! I’ve read quite a few marriage books and this is one of the best.

It’s written by a Christian pastor and psychologist who has worked with many struggling marriages before. That alone says a lot! The book itself actually does explain each love language in depth as well as signs and symptoms of that being someone’s love language. While this love language discovery alone can be a huge breakthrough for most couples, Dr. Chapman does not stop there. He goes on to explain more about how to help hurting or broken marriages.

He explains how to love someone even when they aren’t loving you. He explains about love being a choice as opposed to just a feeling. Beyond just the surface of explaining five love languages, this book really goes into depth on the idea of love and making it work in your marriage. With real life examples that at times left me in tears, you’ll see firsthand the power of speaking love to someone in a way they understand.

I am giving this book a 4.9 out of 5. It’s laid out well, easy to read, and has already outlasted time. And if you don’t like the purple cover, there’s a men’s version that’s geared specifically toward men. The only reason I’m not giving it a 5 is because this particular book is geared toward couples, so it’s not as applicable to singles etc. I know Dr. Chapman has also written books on the five love language related to kids and singles and the workplace and apology. I have not read any of those, but I have heard him speak on a few of those. I always find his insights helpful and, well, enlightening. I believe you will too.
